The nature of these committees can vary between denominations and individual churches, but members of these groups understand that they have a substantial responsibility toward supporting the well-being of the church's pastor or pastors.

The Importance of Clergy Support

Working as a clergy person can be incredibly fulfilling while also being stressful. Clergy are often on duty 24/7, making themselves available for parishioners who experience a crisis. As a result, stress can take its toll on a clergy person's mental and physical health. Similarly, clergy families can also experience strain. Because of this, many congregations have established a committee that provides support to the community's pastor and her family.

Some churches create a pastoral council or advisory board. In situations in which there is conflict within the church; between the pastor and the denomination; or, there are significant issues that require discernment, this committee provides advice and support during that process.
