Love it or hate it, the one redeeming thing about Starbucks is that all their locations are basically the same. Sure, your neighborhood’s probably got a few other cafés—some of them have better coffee, a cozier vibe, or more comfortable chairs—but you know that Starbucks is always open, and always has a wifi connection.

But by playing it safe, are you missing out?

The truth is, most cafés these days have free wifi, along with perks and treats that you won’t find at your local Starbucks. If you’re looking for a place to work, maybe it’s time to break your habit and get out and explore what LA has to offer, caffeine-wise.

Here are 22 cafés you can work in that aren’t Starbucks.

East

Eightfold
ECHO PARK
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Vibe: White Cube

This breezy and minimal light-filled space is the perfect place to open up your MacBook Pro and get down to the business of aesthetics, or the aesthetics of business—whichever comes first. The wifi is fast, the coffee is carefully brewed, and the doors open bright and early at 7 a.m., which seems like a rarity in LA—or at least Echo Park.

Café de Leche
HIGHLAND PARK
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Vibe: Local Hangout

There are a ton of great cafés in Highland Park, but the problem is most of them don’t seem to have wifi or be conducive to working. Café de Leche is the exception, with strong wifi, big tables, and plenty of outlets to keep the power flowing. The vibe is open and social, and you’ll often find laptop warriors mixing it up with young families and regulars on the way to work.

Urban Social House
EAST HOLLYWOOD
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Vibe: Working on my Novel

Urban Social House has an old-school bohemian vibe that will take you straight back to the ‘90s, with its burgundy interior, full-length curtains, and DIY chandelier. The menu features build-your-own sandwiches and quality coffee, and there’s even an upstairs lounge—what more do you need to get the creative juices flowing and burn through that first draft?

Caffe Vita
SILVER LAKE
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Vibe: Struggling Screenwriter

San Francisco Cafes With Wifi

You’ll find plenty of film industry types at Caffe Vita, taking advantage of the quality coffee, sugary pastries, and upstairs loft space. The thoughtful design of the space makes it a great place to work, it’s open until eight, and it’s right across the street from the Vista Theatre if you need jolt of inspiration from the latest blockbuster to nail that half-finished script.

The Semi-Tropic
ECHO PARK
Wifi: Yes
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 9 a.m. to midnight
Vibe: Comfy and communal

If you’re most productive when slouching back into a mound of pillows, then the Semi-Tropic might be your ideal workspace (although there are tables for those that prefer to sit upright). The space feels like a quiet oasis and is perfect if you need to muster up some intense concentration. There’s also plenty of sustenance on the menu to keep you going, including tea, coffee, soups, salads, sandwiches, as well as beer and wine for when you finally hit “send.”

Bourgeois Pig
FRANKLIN VILLAGE
Wifi: Yes
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Vibe: Night Owl Hideout

One of the problems with having perfect weather in LA is that it’s always tempting to ditch work and seize the day—especially if you’re a freelancer. At this Franklin Village institution, there are plenty of dark corners where you can work on your pixel tan without the annoying distraction of bright blue skies and swaying palm trees. It’s also open until 2 a.m. if you need somewhere for the night shift.

West

Verve Coffee Roasters
MELROSE
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Vibe: Designer Boho

The large open space with plenty of tables, free wifi, and casual vibe makes this a great place to get some work done. The coffee is top notch, and there is a plentiful supply of sweet pastries on hand—but note that it is popular with the locals, so it’s best to get in early.

The Assembly
WEST HOLLYWOOD
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Vibe: WeHo Minimal

This light-filled space in West Hollywood is minimal, but don’t be fooled: there are plenty of nooks and crannies, large tables, and modular seating arrangements that make it suitable for group work and solo laptop sessions. Thankfully, The Assembly takes as much pride in their coffee as they do in the interior design, and they also serve a selection of snacks including donuts, pastries, and sandwiches.

The Refinery
SANTA MONICA
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Vibe: Down to Business

Cafe

This unpretentious café in Santa Monica may not be a landmark of interior design, but it does have big windows, large communal tables, and excellent coffee: everything you need to get the job done.

Literati
BRENTWOOD
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Vibe: Working on my Bestselling Book Series

Literati lives up to the name: if you come in here at any time of day, you’re likely to see dozens of people pounding away at their laptops, both inside and outside on the shady, covered patio. Don’t let that discourage you, though; there are plenty of tables to go around. The coffee is pretty good and there is an extensive menu that includes salads, burgers, and sandwiches, along with larger plates if you need a full meal.

Coffee Connection
MAR VISTA
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes (but you might have to fight for one)
Hours: 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Vibe: Essay Due Tomorrow

It could be the 15 percent student discount that makes this place so popular, but it’s worth the struggle if you can get a spot in the huge, gorgeous courtyard. If you’re here during peak times, you might have to fight for a power outlet. As a bonus, it’s open at 5:30 a.m. if you need to bang out a thousand words before your 9-to-5 gig.

Downtown LA

Lazy Brewing Company
TOY DISTRICT
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Vibe: Exposed Brick and Cacti

Although it’s located in the Toy District Downtown, when you step inside Lazy Brewing Company, the minimal Californian interior, bearded baristas, and plentiful cacti may make you think you’ve been magically transported to Echo Park. This converted warehouse features plenty of open space, large tables, and a simple food menu with salads, toasted sandwiches, breakfast items, and pastries.

Groundwork
ARTS DISTRICT
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Vibe: Cooler than Starbucks

Conveniently located in the Arts District, this Groundworks outpost is open and spacious, and features plenty of large communal tables and a mezzanine area that makes it perfect for work. There’s free wifi, but if you’re going to be there a long time, pick your table strategically, as there aren’t a lot of wall outlets.

Mega Bodega
BROADWAY
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Vibe: Write Drunk, Edit Caffeinated

Even though Ernest Hemingway never said those immortal words that are often attributed to him, “Write drunk, edit sober,” it turns out that science has proven the apocryphal quote to betrue anyway. (Although researchers discovered that “Write drunk, edit caffeinated” is more accurate.) That’s great news, because Mega Bodega gives you the perfect opportunity to practice the time-honored tradition with a selection of craft brews to get the creative juices flowing, and strong coffee to help you clean up the mess afterward.

Il Caffè
BROADWAY
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Vibe: Downtown Stockholm

If you’re tired of palm trees, cacti, and green tea lattes and just want a café that actually knows how to make a macchiato, look no further than Il Caffè. The Euro aesthetic isn’t an affectation here—Il Caffè actually has four sister establishments located in Stockholm. The café isn’t huge, but there are plenty of work-friendly tables and the menu features quality coffee, European beers and wines, and a selection of traditional Italian sandwiches.

Dulce Dos
DOWNTOWN
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Vibe: Eclectic Chic

Dulce Dos is housed in a warehouse space behind the American Apparel building. Inside, it’s spacious, with plenty of eclectic artwork, large communal tables, and a polished concrete floor. The coffee is solid, but the menu also features more experimental creations like bacon donuts and blueberry matcha lattes.

San

Chimney Coffee House
CHINATOWN
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Vibe: Chinatown Industrial

There aren’t many cafés in Chinatown, but Chimney Coffee House is conveniently located to both Downtown and Union Station, and they’re known for their incredible food menu, which features Asian-influenced burgers, griddle breakfasts, and salad bowls. The interior is a kind of bare-bones warehouse space, but there are plenty of large tables where you can spread out and get the job done.

Facebook/Document

Mid-Wilshire/Koreatown

Met Her at a Bar
MID-WILSHIRE
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Vibe: Cozy

This brand new café on La Brea isn’t exactly huge, but it is designed for working, with big communal tables and a long, window-facing bar top. Don’t stop off at McDonald’s on the way: you’ll want to try one of their incredible egg muffin sandwiches.

Bricks & Scones
LARCHMONT
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Vibe: Afternoon Tea

This low-key Larchmont hangout is the go-to workspace for many locals who appreciate its fast wifi, plentiful outlets, and upstairs “study nook”—a quiet space where talking is banned and serious study is encouraged. If you’re here for the long haul, note that there’s a 10 percent discount if you bring your own mug. The food menu features sandwiches, pastries, soups, and of course, scones with jam and cream.

République
HANCOCK PARK
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Vibe: Indulgence

The interior of République is nothing short of stunning, so if the caffeine just isn’t giving you the pick-me-up you need, see if you can sneak a table in this upscale La Brea establishment. The breakfast menu features a range of classics, from Shakshuka to bread and jam to a Bloody Mary, if you’re so inclined.

Document Coffee Bar
KOREATOWN
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. Download suara sirine pemadam kebakaran. to 7 p.m.
Vibe: K-Town Bustle

From a work perspective, the best thing about Document is the long communal tables that stretch from one end of the space to the other. When you walk in at any time of day, it’s common to see laptops all lined up in a row, as K-Town natives power through their daily tasks. The space also hosts sporadic events like art shows and poetry readings.

Andante
FAIRFAX
Wifi: Free
Outlets: Yes
Hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Vibe: Wood and Concrete

Sonic Wifi San Francisco

If you’ve been to any of the Andante locations, you’ll know they specialize in high-quality coffee. The main difference between Fairfax and other locations like Echo Park and Downtown is the size of the space. There’s plenty of room here to spread out, with large wooden tables, strong wifi, and numerous outlets to make things easy. There’s also a delicious selection of pastries, sandwiches, and snacks to tide you over during long haul projects.
